Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

The default xserver-xorg in Kubuntu Hardy Alpha 4 includes a line to load Type1 fonts. Because none are installed in this release, X fails to load.

Please see comments a few minutes ago on Bug #190381. They are relevant also to this bug report. For your ease of convenience, am attaching the same /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Thank you for keeping the bugs separate. Could you also attach the xorg.conf unless you are using the vanilla config from the installation?

I have possibly found the problem. Several weeks ago, I was having difficulty figuring out how to install the proprietary nvidia driver. I tried nvidia-xconfig. Perhaps that is the source of the reference to type1 fonts and to the incorrect settings for the Dell 2405 FPW monitor ((Bug 190381). That xorg.conf is attached as xorg.conf.20080209105118.

Earlier this evening, I started a Hardy session. kdm and kdm-kde4 are still broken and I tried startx. The X session started and the KDE splash screen went through its stuff. After about 20-30 seconds, X crashed. The screen dump of the console session is attached in the file xcrash-20080209T2135. After that, I moved the xorg.conf file out of the way and regenerated a whole new one using your earlier suggestion of dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg. A copy of that file is attached as xorg.conf.20080209213408.
