Bug Description

The utilities folder is labeled as "X-GNOME-Utilities.directory" on latest Ubuntu 20.04. This is caused by a regression in latest gnome-shell (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/2623) and fix for this regression is already available: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/merge_requests/1196

Please, fix this issue downstream before Ubuntu 20.04 is released. Otherwise it will look bad, unprofessional and be confusing to users.

The upstream Merge Request was merged, however a new gnome-shell release won't most likely happen in time before Ubuntu 20.04 is released so this still needs to be patched downstream in Ubuntu.

Marco, could you cherry pick in the Vcs/get it in the next upload?

To give more info about this regression:

The issue was caused by this commit that does not appear to be mentioned in the gnome-shell package changelog, but was manually cherry picked in Debian/Ubuntu because it is not present in the released gnome-shell 3.36.1: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/commit/8dd9cbac7f48089b89d63e05f5ccfa18d8940c0a

The correct solution is to revert the downstream patch that caused the regression and replace it by a patch made from this commit: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/commit/35a3320851634015dae2e5a613dcc0a0edbc6d2c

Brian Murray (brian-murray) wrote : Please test proposed package

Hello AsciiWolf, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gnome-shell into focal-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s) fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in -proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

It looks like this is possibly already Fix Released? Per #6 it was added to 3.36.1-5ubuntu1 which is older than what I have installed:

cjohnston@lp1872434:~$ apt-cache policy gnome-shell
gnome-shell:
  Installed: 3.36.1-5ubuntu2
  Candidate: 3.36.1-5ubuntu2

The verification of the Stable Release Update for gnome-shell has completed successfully and the package is now being released to -updates. Subsequently, the Ubuntu Stable Release Updates Team is being unsubscribed and will not receive messages about this bug report. In the event that you encounter a regression using the package from -updates please report a new bug using ubuntu-bug and tag the bug report regression-update so we can easily find any regressions.
