Bug Description

[ Impact ]

When keyboard layout is set in a secondary layout (i.e. Persian) pressing Super does not open Activities overview. It just works when the input is set on English.

[ Test case ]

- Enable a secondary keyboard layout
- Switch to this layout
- Hit super
- Overview should open

[ Regression potential ]

Modifiers may no work well in shell context

Well, this bug affects me but in a slightly different way: it works in portuguese layout, but not in english layout (more precisely using the english international with AltGr + dead keys). But the other shortcuts using the left Super key work fine.

I'm also on the Ubuntu 20.04 and the problem only appear after today updates.

After more testing, if I change the order of the input sources, the problem only exists if I'm on any source that's not the first one. After changing the order, now the problem exists in the portuguese layout but not in the english one.

@dani.behzi, can you also test that this is the same with you?

I'll look into how to find the change log from gnome-shell-common, which is the package I suspect is the culprit of this error...

I have found out now that for me the problem occurs only if "Pointer Location" on the "Keyboard & Mouse" page of the gnome-tweaks utility is set. I have turned it off now and the left Ctrl key now works with all keyboard layouts again.

If you happen to not find the mouse pointer sometimes, simply make it bigger, with "Cursor Size" under "Universal Access" in the GNOME Control Center.

I am facing the same problem.
Can confirm that only input 1 works regardless of language. And that keyboard shortcuts with Super work regardless.

Here is my extra 2 cents:

When I go into 'Show keyboard layout' to see which keypresses are registered, the left super key is not registered but the right one is.

One more thing: if I change the activities overview to be triggered by the right super key instead of left (via gnome-tweaks), then the left super key will be registered but the right super key will not.

I also tried different configs in gnome-tweaks for the Alt/Win key behavior (under Additional Layout Options) but it did not seem to make any difference.

Super key works only for default input layout. When you go to Settings -> Region and Language -> Input sources, the super key will work only for first input layout. When you change position of them the bug with super key switch to second layouts and vice versa.

Possibly could be related to this issue in upstream: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/1144

@dani.behzi comment #8 was very helpful. I wad also turned on the Pointer Location setting in gnome tweaks, and all Ctrl+Key shortcuts were unusable in the secondary input mode. This is much more devastating than missing Super functionality in secondary input mode (Ctrl+C/+X/+V, Ctrl+Shift+Arrow etc).

Still Super key problem remains.

Hello Danial, or anyone else affected,

Accepted mutter into focal-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-focal to verification-done-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance for helping!
