Bug Description

[Impact]

 * In the past a lack of updated open-vm-tools versions was found fatal
and therefore we agreed to regularly backport those to the latest LTS.
This is backporting the recent version 11.0 to B/E releases.

[Test Case]

 * Test open-vm-tools done by VMWare QA Team as agreed for these
   backports.

[Regression Potential]

 * This has the usual regression potential of a new version upgrade and
therefore is higher than a usual SRU. But as agreed int he past to
support new (virtual) hardware open-vm-tools shall regularly be
backported. I suggest keeping it somewhat longer in proposed than usual
just to be on the safe side.

[Other Info]

 * This is a practice for or quite a while (almost two years now), see:
   - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/open-vm-tools/+bug/1784638
   - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/open-vm-tools/+bug/1813944
   - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/open-vm-tools/+bug/1822204
   - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/open-vm-tools/+bug/1844834

The request back then came from the community and the decision back then was between VMWare and Ubuntu. VMWare QA Team since then does the qualification of these uploads as we (I) don't have a matrix of Host versions for that around.

Under the accepted special SRU cases [1] this qualifies for #2 and #3 of [2].

Hi, the plan is - as done every cycle and agreed in past discussions - to do that once Focal releases.

That allows multiple changes/updates in the current development release and just one SRU of the update to the LTS.

That would be in ~1 month from now, if there are external reasons this is needed faster please explain and we can consider an earlier bump.

@Yuhua - as usual there is a preliminary build in a PPA at [1].
I'd appreciate if you could pre-sniff them before the SRU Team takes a look and accepts them to -proposed for the final verification.

Thanks Yuhua for the sanity check.

I'll wait until my team had time for a review and then will propose it to the SRU Team.

It works well when do sanity check for open-vm-tools 11.0.5 in -proposed repository in ubuntu 18.04 desktop and ubuntu 19.10 server.

@Yuhua,
Glad that the sanity check is fine.

Will there be a more extensive check and more in details tests results coming that will be added to the bug later?

We have couple of layers of testing on different Linux distros including Ubuntu before releasing the open-vm-tools 11.0.5. For this integration, the testing would be sufficient, there's no extensive testing.

Ok, thanks Yuhua for adding these details.

Per the extensive pre-release 11.0.5 tests and the sanity checks of the same on the builds in proposed I'm setting the state to verified then.

P.S. The SRU Team usually wants the extensive tests to happen on exactly the builds that are in -proposed. If there is any chance to run them that would be great to provide extra confidence before releaseing that.

I think ideally we want the testing to be done on the exact built packages. That being said, I think we aged this enough and I think we can release it as is, though with less confidence.
