Bug Description

laptop Asus x50sl with graphic card AMD rv620 / Mobility Radeon HD3450.
Distro: Linux Mint 19.2 Tina base: Ubuntu 18.04 bionic.
This happen trying any distro. I tried Ubuntu, Manjaro, Debian, Deepin, MX and so on.
I'm stuck with Kernel 4.15.0-54 and 5.0.0-20 (and the contemporary 5.3 kernel). I cannot upgrade to newer kernels.
Seems that the fixes for bug #1791312 broke my kind of card.

I tried to generate an apport log but my distro uses systemd-coredump and I don't know how to generate a log. I tried to install apport removing coredump but does not complete the log generation.

I'm also stuck with Kernel 4.15.0-76 (as beeing LTS) and 5.3.0-28 (limited to Aug.2020 support).

Ask for backport of bug-fix to Kernel 4.15.0 or other LTS Kernel.

Hi!
Confirm that problem rise with kernel 4.15.0.55 (is LTS, supported till
2022).
Locked kernel update to 4.15.0 54 for now, which is enough for normal use.

Hello!
A proposal:
make the fix for bug #1791312 depend on either the card-version or (more flexible) a kernel-option for the radeon-driver.
As told, the fix works well for "AMD/ATI] RV530/M56-P controller"

Hi, is there anything I can do to help with this?

I have the exact same built-in graphics on my laptop and have the exact same issue so have been stuck with kernel 4.15.0-54 for a while now.

The latest Ubuntu LTS 20.04 and 18.04.4 all come pre-installed with a more recent kernel that cause graphical corruption on my machine.

Thanks

Yep, that works beautifully on Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS. Thanks.

Any idea if/when we would be looking at getting this committed into the kernel proper and back ported to all the current supported distros?

Let me know if you need any further help testing. I'm limited in the hardware I have available but will help wherever I can so I can officially use the latest and greatest kernel.

Hi,
I have the same problem on ATI mobility Radeon HD 3650 (RV635) installed on laptop Compal FL90. Card worked corretly on old Linux releases, but recently all different distributions I try have corrupted screen image. Problem exist only on internal laptop LCD. External LCD connected to VGA port works without problems.
Last kernel which works for me is 4.15.0-54-generic. Starting from 4.15.0-55-generic I have corrupted screen.
Please see some more details here:
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=346544&p=1999384
Is it possible to have this solved on newer kernel releases ?

I have the same issue on a Dell Studio 15 with Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450.
Tired of Win7 I tried last weekend to install various linux distros without success.
A friend of mine, after reading this #1861554 bug gave me a pendrive with Ubuntu distro 16.04.1 (LTS) with kernel 4.15.0-54-generic and it worked flawlessly.
All releases and distros after that date are useless on my laptop.

Old algorithm which were included up to kernel 4.15.0-54-generic seems to work no problems for long time until there has been reported problem with Radeon X1600 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1791312
It seems that when algorithm has been changed it broke image for multiple different card types which were working before.
If it is not possible to create solution which would work correctly on all cards there should be at least added some parameter for graphics configuration which would allow to switch between old and new settings manually.
Something like:
 TearFree: auto
  supported: off, on, auto

I would suggest to add 3 modes which would choose between auto, old algorithm and new algorithm.
In auto mode it would select new algorithm for Radeon X1600 and old for other cards. At least it is confirmed that old should be used with HD3450 and HD3650. In any case if auto would work incorrectly user could easily switch manually.

This is really problematic for laptops since you can't just simply replace card with another cheap card which has better linux support. Many older laptops which are running older Windows releases could be switched to Linux instead of Windows 10. Currently it does not work correctly on any recent linux distros.
