Bug Description

Binary package hint: freemind

FreeMind 0.7.1 (currently in repositories) -- out since February 15, 2004 (2004-02-15)
FreeMind 0.9.0 beta 15 (timeline reference) -- out since November 30, 2007 (2007-11-30)
FreeMind 0.9.0 RC6 (current) -- out since October 22, 2009 (2009-10-22)

Official packages: http://sourceforge.net/projects/freemind/files/

Debian currently only has version 0.7.1 packaged as seen here: http://packages.debian.org/freemind

Therefore, in order for 0.9.0 RC6 to be included, it must be packaged manually and not just merged with Debian.

And why is this a beta, and do you consider it appropriate for an LTS release?

I have tested the packages in http://eric.lavar.de/comp/linux/debian/experimental/ and have experienced no bugs or errors.

I do not have the skills to build the package myself (in chroot), especially as it can run via a .sh script.

Why is it beta? It's been beta for over a year now, I think that's just how the programmer likes to mark his programs.

Do I consider it appropriate for LTS? More so than 0.7.1 which has been out for 4 years.

This version gives the user ability to export in SVG, SWF, PNG, JPEG, ODT, HTML, interactive HTML (using JavaScript) and so on, all of which are unavailable in 0.7.1. It removes the dependency on the older sun-java5-bin package and is internationalized in over 20 languages

I've attached the ChangeLog.txt, found as ./history.txt, since 0.7.1 which is currently in the repositories.

Also, it has an RC bug for a few months now, and it was removed from testing because of it.

I very very much second this request too... I never used a single "stable release" of freemind for years: the development cycle is - alas - very slow, with the beta staying such for months, if not years, but the quality of those is normally very good, and the bugs - if any major - are essentially in relation to the experimental features, and not to the legacy one.

Besides, in the repos the only comparable available software is Kdissert. Comparable means that people can compare the two, and FreeMind wins 100:1 against kdissert... without counting the annoyances of running a KDA app in a gnome environment.

Looking forward to the upgrade, then, and thanks to brettalton for having brought this up. FM is an awesome programme and aid for visual thinkers! :)

I simply would like to inform those interested in this topic, that - while we all wait for the packaging of the latest beta - the procedure to create binaries from the source is *really* easy. More or less it works like this:

1) Download the source and uncompress the file
2) Install ant [sudo apt-get install ant]
3) Move into the source code directory
3) Run "ant dist"
4) The newly created "freemind.sh" is the executable you need

I used the Sun Java 6 (installed via ubuntu-restricted-extras package)

Hope this can help somebody here. :)

Hi,

I'm the Eric L. who makes the upstream and Debian .deb packages.

FreeMind 0.9.0.RC1 was just uploaded to Debian and is waiting for approval in the NEW queue: http://ftp-master.debian.org/new.html (it went from contrib to main, that's why it's considered NEW).

Few notes:

1. let me know if I can make your life "side-porting" from Debian to Ubuntu easier.
2. you will need also to side-port libxsd2jibx-java.
3. beware that both xsd2jibx and FreeMind rely on version 1.0.x of libjibx-java, whereas Jaunty contains a 1.1.x version, which is (slightly) not backwards compatible. I didn't (yet) take the burden to upgrade and solve potential incompatibilities, but I'm interested in learning how you're doing it :-)

Can we please get this application updated rather than continue to rely upon a 4 year old version that really is lacking in many features? My guess is that, given the accelerated rate of development that we're seeing compared to past years, 0.9.0 will certainly be out very soon. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a 1.0 release before the end of the year.

Thank you, all.

Eric L., I have been using your repo on my ubuntu installs for some time now. I find that it generally works great with generally comparable performance to the Windows version. A couple of areas where it could be improved is in the application menu (Karmic w Gnome 2.28.1) it does not have an icon nor do the *.mm data files. Also Gnome seems to think the *.mm files are "Troff MM input documents" (whatever those are). I have tried monkeying with the Gnome file associations to fix it, but I couldn't get it to work in the attempt I made a month or so ago...

Anyhow, thanks for providing the repo and good look getting it in Debian! That would be huge as it would certainly smooth the way into Ubuntu I would think.

I tried to find the key I can import for your repository, do you have same?

program itself refuses to start it writes:
The pattern file format has changed and it seems, that your pattern file '/home/../.freemind/patters.xml' is formated in the old way. Should I try to repair the pattern file.....?
with 'yes' and 'no' options.
The file does not exists when this dialog is displayed. Ragardles what I choose I get 2nd dialog with Mode not available: MindMap with OK, and then 3rd dialog with freemind.main.FreeMind can't be started.
after that file '/home/../.freemind/patters.xml' is created and has the same content as /etc/freemind/patterns.xml.

I also tried to purge the package and reinstall without help.
my default lang is LANG=cs_CZ.UTF-8, but attached log is grabbed with LANG=C

@Radek: thanks for the feedback.

Here for the resolution:

The problem was with libjibx-java being version 1.1.x under Ubuntu J, K & L (instead of 1.0.x under Debian, and former versions of Ubuntu). For these distributions, please use the repository:

    deb http://eric.lavar.de/comp/linux/debian/ ubuntu/

I didn't test explicitly with Ubuntu, but it should work... As always, let me know if not.

Side note: I don't have a key for my repositories, it's mostly a reason of lazyness, if someone shows me a simple HOWTO, I'll do my best to fix this... :-^

@Tim: regarding integration within Gnome, do you see an improvement after having called "sudo update-mime-database /usr/share/mime", after installation of the current packages?

I also the same ".mm" files "Troff" association as Tim (#37). Running:
  sudo update-mime-database /usr/share/mime
created the mapping for me. The ".mm" files now identify as "FreeMind Map", and double clicking from Nautilus opens the file successfully in FreeMind.

Evan, what a lame comment!

People have been posting left and right that they rebuilt the packages in their PPA or elsewhere. If there is no immediately obvious candidate at the moment that is only because sponsorship has been dragging on so long without anything ever happening. I'm currently rebuilding RC6 in my PPA (something which I think can be reasonably expected of a sponsorr to do himself, too), please take a look in a few hours. If you didn't feel like doing that you could have searched through the PPAs with https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas?name_filter=freemind and you would have immediately stumbled across Igor Gomes' PPA (https://launchpad.net/~igorgomes/+archive/ppa/+packages) which already has an appropriate package it seems. And if even that would have been too much to ask from a sponsor, then I think a normal comment of "what is the status quo, what is there to do?" would have gotten a quick response, I'm sure.

The single-minded pursuit of "get it off my radar" instead of actually fixing issues and improving Ubuntu isn't helping anyone. In that sense, I kindly ask for a little more effort next time from you, Evan, to make sure you are actually deserving of your newly acquired sponsor powers. Thank you for your contribution.

BTW, the Ubuntu package used to have a delta towards Debian. I don't have time to look through it right now, but I'd appreciate if one of the many people interested in this package were to take a quick glance to make sure there is nothing in there that is still relevant for RC6.

Wow, dude. Chill out. I realize the "get it off my radar" may be annoying for the bug that I'm taking off my radar, but that's not the point. I spent 15 minutes looking at this bug, reading through the comments, and trying to figure out why u-u-s had been subscribed. When I leave u-u-s subscribed, I make any other sponsor looking at the queue go through the same process. It makes it harder for anybody to do sponsorship.

And I /did/ go look through PPAs. I found that none of the versions in PPAs were ready to be uploaded. Igor had the most recent release, but it completely dropped the old changelog, which is why I assumed I was missing the version that was ready to be uploaded.

So once again, I'm unsubscribing ubuntu-universe-sponsors until there's a package ready for sponsorship.

Revision history for this message
Evan Broder (broder) wrote :

Oh, sorry Rolf - I didn't see the mention that you were uploading the new RC6. I'm taking a look at that now.

Uh, first off, since this is a merge, not a sync, you should leave the old Ubuntu-specific changelog entries in the changelog, interleaved with the Debian changelog. (i.e. in sorted order).

I'm assuming you took this package from <http://eric.lavar.de/comp/linux/debian/>, since it's not in Debian? Do you know why this package hasn't been uploaded to Debian, since this guy appears to be the maintainer?

If we're pulling from somewhere that's not Debian, the package should have a -0ubuntu1 version number, I think, which would also mean that XSBC-Original-Maintainer should be set.

I'm not entirely sure how pulling a package with its own history from not-Debian works, though. I'll go ahead and re-sub u-u-s in the hopes that somebody else has a better idea.

Sponsors: Look at the package in <https://launchpad.net/~r0lf/+archive/ppa/+packages>

@Evan: the package is not _yet_ in Debian because I'm the maintainer but no Debian Developer (DD) and my sponsor seems to be a bit under water (he already accepted the package, and promised to take care of it, but it seems to take a bit more time than usual).
I can understand that someone is busy just before Christmas, so I'll ping him again at the beginning of next year.

BTW, I already wrote it, I think, but if someone sees changes I should do to my package to make it more Ubuntu like without breaking the Debian rules/policy, I'd be happy to do it.

I unsubscribed ubuntu-universe-sponsors and marked it as invalid. Here my reason: The bug report is very long. As sponsor it needs a long time to read through it. To get an updated package two steps are needed.

1. The package from Eric should be uploaded to Debian. I pinged my Debian sponsor. So maybe he will upload it sooner.

2. The Debian package needs to be synced or merged to Ubuntu. Please open a new bug report for that once the package enters Debian.

W: GPG error: http://eric.lavar.de sid Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 27CD3F36869D2871
W: Failed to fetch http://eric.lavar.de/comp/linux/debrepo/dists/sid/freemind/binary-amd64/Packages.gz 404 Not Found

From looking at the server, I'm guessing this is because you only publish i386 files. Can I help to test if the i386 debs will install and run on 64bit somehow? I'm happy to lend a hand if I can.

Ups, sorry, actually 2 mistakes:
1. you need to install my public key to avoid the warning, see http://eric.lavar.de/comp/linux/debrepo/
2. I've fixed the problem with the architectures (I misunderstood how 'all' packages are handled).
It should now be fine but let me know.

Awesome, I was able to upgrade freemind and all seems well. :-)

I tried freeplane, curious to compare, and I get this error:
Depends: libknopflerfish-osgi-framework-java but it is not installable

Not strictly related to this bug though. Happy to follow that up somewhere else if that would be more appropriate.

@EricL,

On my Ubuntu/Maverick, I added the repo you made available and it upgraded
without issue. :)

One note, I could get your key to import with the wget command that was on
your website.

The after it download the key it said:

and manually imported with synaptic.

Thanks!

@Eric: I also had issues with the gpg key. In the end, what worked for me was prepending the import command with sudo. However, now, if I re-run the command, it seems to work fine just as it's written on your debrepo page. Strange. Not sure what to suggest.

I was able to successfully upgrade freemind on Ubuntu 10.04 64bit with your repo changes. Thanks again.
