Bug Description

=== SRU Justification ===
[Impact]
Lenovo ideapad 530S-14ARR Wifi rfkill hard blocked

[Fix]
The platform in question doesn't have hardware RF switch, so quirk it
off.

[Test]
User confirm it fixes the issue.

[Regression Potential]
Minimal. This fix is limited to one specific platform.

=== Original Bug Report ===
I have Lenovo 530s laptop with Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter (rev 31).

The menu shows that wireless is off. Turning on the wireless from the menu does not do anything.

Interestingly, I have Lenovo 510s with Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter (rev 30) and it works just fine on Ubuntu.

For me, it appears as rev 30 works and rev 31 does not. Is this possible?

Do you have a switch on your laptop to block bluetooth/wifi? Can you make sure it's not toggled on?

I don't think this laptop has such a block button. There is a button (F7) with airplane symbol. It does not seem to have any effect (even when used with FN key).

What I know is:

- If I boot to Windows, the wifi works there.
- Bluetooth works fine in Linux.

Looks good. With this kernel, wlan works just fine. I can connect normally to the wlan networks.

rfkill now shows:
ID TYPE DEVICE SOFT HARD
 0 wlan ideapad_wlan unblocked unblocked
 1 bluetooth ideapad_bluetooth unblocked unblocked
 2 bluetooth hci0 unblocked unblocked
 3 wlan phy0 unblocked unblocked

Can I somehow switch to this new kernel in 18.04 in such a way that it keeps getting security updates?

Hi,

I tested with only the patched kernel and it enables wifi.

However, there still seems to be something weird happening. Even though, the wifi seems to work, it might take from seconds to minutes for a web page to load. It feels like having a bad connection, but in a mixed way. For example, it might take long time to get into youtube and have video running, but the video then might run ok. With MS Windows, the wifi works well and there are no delays.

Hi

How do I test the proposed patch? I enabled backports. Then did apt update & apt dist-upgrade.

My Linux version is:
Linux 530s 4.18.0-17-generic #18~18.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 15 15:27:12 UTC 2019 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

ID TYPE DEVICE SOFT HARD
 0 wlan ideapad_wlan unblocked blocked
 1 bluetooth ideapad_bluetooth unblocked blocked
 2 bluetooth hci0 unblocked unblocked
 3 wlan phy0 blocked unblocked

With 4.18.0-17 the wifi is hard blocked.

Hi,

I think I have enabled pre-released updates. Is the kernel version (4.18.0-17-generic), the one that should have this patch?

I am wondering because wifi does not seem to work with this kernel.
