I have installed 1.0.95ubuntu0.1 from bionic-proposed and everything works as expected (cosmic is now recognizable, could bootstrap a cosmic schroot).

I have installed 1.0.78+nmu1ubuntu1.6 from xenial-proposed on my xenial instance and run debootstrap --print-debs for cosmic and it worked.

I have installed 1.0.91ubuntu1.2 from artful-proposed on a quick artful instance and ran debootstrap --print-debs for cosmic with success.

I have installed 1.0.59ubuntu0.10 from trusty-proposed on a quick trusty instance and ran debootstrap --print-debs for cosmic with success.

The verification of the Stable Release Update for debootstrap has completed successfully and the package has now been released to -updates. Subsequently, the Ubuntu Stable Release Updates Team is being unsubscribed and will not receive messages about this bug report. In the event that you encounter a regression using the package from -updates please report a new bug using ubuntu-bug and tag the bug report regression-update so we can easily find any regressions.

Note this bug is mentioned in the changelog for adding disco, whilst the rest of releases appear to be using https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debootstrap/+bug/1800945 bugnumber.

Adding just the symlink is not good enough for disco+ as one also needs to backport MERGED_USR=yes stanza, and/or MERGED_USR support, depending on how far back one wants to go. Otherwise, older releases will bootstrap disco non-usr-merged.

cosmic is fine
bionic needs to default to merged_usr, and fix up to the -k option
older than bionic need merged_usr setup backport and -k option fix working on the updates

Can someone take a look at the reported autopkgtest regressions? Thanks.

The test failures for bionic aren't regressions due to the debootstrap changes rather they started failing with apt 1.6.5 so I'll be releasing it for bionic.
