Bug Description

[Impact]
Ubuntu users concerns with privacy of their IP addresses over IPv6.

[Test case]
1) Configure netplan with IPv6 privacy enabled:

network:
  version: 2
  ethernets:
    eth0:
      dhcp6: true
      ipv6-privacy: true

2) Run 'netplan apply'
3) Run 'ip -6 addr'
4) Verify that additional temporary addresses are added by the kernel.

[Regression Potential]
Minimal. This enables or disables the setting for IPv6 privacy addresses on an per-interface basis, and defaults remain unchanged.

---

Summary:

netplan contains no configuration entry that allows one to enable IPv6 Privacy Extensions (RFC 4941) when autogenerated (DHCPv6 stateless, SLAAC) addressing is used.

This should map to the IPv6PrivacyExtensions entry for systemd-networkd (man systemd.network, [Network] section), and the ipv6.ip6-privacy entry for NetworkManager (https://developer.gnome.org/NetworkManager/stable/settings-ipv6.html).

I notice as well that even if net.ipv6.conf.default.use_tempaddr=2 and net.ipv6.conf.all.use_tempaddr=2 and net.ipv6.conf.<interface>.use_tempaddr=2, after netplan apply is executed, net.ipv6.conf.<interface>.use_tempaddr=0 and no RFC 4941 address is present on the interface.

Hi,

Are you able to test a package for me? I have uploaded netplan.io 0.39+dja1 to https://launchpad.net/~daxtens/+archive/ubuntu/builder - if you could add the ppa and install that version of netplan, it adds a `ip6-privacy` key. Currently I've only wired up the networkd backend, but if that works (or if you need NM for testing), I'll wire up NM.

I've also pushed the WIP patch to https://github.com/daxtens/netplan/tree/ip6privacy if you would like to see it.

I haven't got a good ipv6 network on hand, but I verified that with ip6-privacy: yes for ens3, I saw that /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/ens3/use_tempaddr contained 2.

Regards,
Daniel

Referring to #998223, I have the opposite. When I configure static addresses, I get an RFC 4941 address, regardless of sysctl settings (are they even read before netplan starts?).

Netplan should have this completely configurable without having to go find other config settings, in my opinion.

Hmm, maybe it needs to be explicitly set for NM when the user sets it to off. I'll look into it at some point soon, hopefully.

I am not sure if I can confirm this for Ubuntu 18.04, as I don't know if nplan is actually the package being used below the GUI.

However: Using Linux Mint 19 (Ubuntu 18.04) with sysctl configured privacy extensions:

net.ipv6.conf.all.use_tempaddr = 2
net.ipv6.conf.default.use_tempaddr = 2
net.ipv6.conf.wlp4s0.use_tempaddr = 2

Settings get completely ignored and no temporary address is created.
Only if I open the configuration for the Wifi network I am connected to and set the privacy options under IPv6 I get a temporary address assigned.

It seems right now there are two options: (?)
- Have nplan follow sysctl settings and keep current Ubuntu documentation
- Have new nplan settings for this (e.g. I could not find a global setting anywhere) and update Ubuntu documentation

I have a somewhat simmilar situation with the one described in reply #7 but with a little twist. When I configure static ipv6 address and set dhcp6: false, the systems sends a solicit message to the dhcpv6 server, optains an address from the pool, generates a privacy address and binds them to the interface in addition to the static address. I realised that there might be something wrong after I saw the dhcpv6 server updating forward and reverse maps to the hostname of the ubuntu machine (server 18.04.02 lts). The radvd server is set to assisted (ra flags - managed, other statefull, prefix flags - onlink,auto,router).

This bug was fixed in the package netplan.io - 0.96-0ubuntu0.18.04.4

---------------
netplan.io (0.96-0ubuntu0.18.04.4) bionic; urgency=medium

  * debian/patches/git_revert_explicit_renderer_def_ebc212a.patch: revert
    commit ebc212a: make renderer values explicit at the end of each parsing
    pass; it breaks "default" renderer behavior when multiple files may set
    a global renderer and expect the last to take effect globally.
    (LP: #1825206)
  * debian/patches/git_reorg_netdef_validation_181b583.patch: correct the
    fallout from the above change: validate netdefs in a single pass at the
    very end of parsing, once we know which is the applicable renderer. This
    makes sure tunnels get validated correctly.

netplan.io (0.96-0ubuntu0.18.04.3) bionic; urgency=medium

  * debian/patches/disable-networkd-tunnels-ipip-gre.patch: disable IPIP and

    networkd bring up the device automatically as in other releases.

This bug was fixed in the package netplan.io - 0.96-0ubuntu0.18.10.3

---------------
netplan.io (0.96-0ubuntu0.18.10.3) cosmic; urgency=medium

  * debian/patches/git_revert_explicit_renderer_def_ebc212a.patch: revert
    commit ebc212a: make renderer values explicit at the end of each parsing
    pass; it breaks "default" renderer behavior when multiple files may set
    a global renderer and expect the last to take effect globally.
    (LP: #1825206)
  * debian/patches/git_reorg_netdef_validation_181b583.patch: correct the
    fallout from the above change: validate netdefs in a single pass at the
    very end of parsing, once we know which is the applicable renderer. This
    makes sure tunnels get validated correctly.

netplan.io (0.96-0ubuntu0.18.10.2) cosmic; urgency=medium

  * d/p/0001-Partially-revert-the-change-for-enabling-systemd-net.patch:
    Partially revert changes to networkd jobs ordering: leave systemd-networkd
    enabled in multi-user.target instead of network-online.target, as in some
    minimal setups there might be no job requiring network-online.target,
    whereas the natural target to reach for booting is multi-user.target.
    (LP: #1821867)

netplan.io (0.96-0ubuntu0.18.10.1) cosmic; urgency=medium

  * Backport netplan.io 0.96 to 18.10.
  * debian/patches/glib_changes.patch: Patch tests to work again on older GLib.
  * debian/control: adjust Depends for cosmic / re-add nplan package.

netplan.io (0.96-0ubuntu1) disco; urgency=medium
