Bug Description

Having a problem getting Inkscape to start up. X11
loads without fail whether opening Inkscape or the X11
app itself. Upon initial installation, Inkscape
requests that it run fc-cache. I allow the process to
complete, at which time I am asked to restart Inkscape.
I go to restart the program, and it loads, but sits
there for a few seconds then quits.

I've had problems getting previous versions of inkscape
to start up in the past. I don't recall how I overcame
the issue, but for a while it ran fine, then later
broke on me for reasons I cannot determine. No luck at
all with this latest release.

See attached log for details...

I have a similar problem. I downloaded the latest Mac OS X build, unpacked
it, started it up. It too asked me to run the fc-cache, which I okay, then
it just crashes. It remains running as an application but appears as "not
responding" when I look into my running process in the Activity Monitor
application. So, I have to force quit Inkscape, but X11 gives me no
problems.

I'm running a 1.5 GHz PowerPC G4 with Mac OS 10.4.8. Thanx

At least I'm not alone then. I have another machine, a Dual 2.0 G5 running
Panther, 10.3.9 I believe, and it has no problems with the latest build of
Inkscape at all. Could it be a support problem with older PPC machines, IE
a problem with the latest OSX OS itself? I can run other X11 apps such as
Gimp and OpenOffice without any problems on the G4... hrm.

Sometimes when starting up Inkscape and seeing it crash, it leaves running
quartz-wm or an activity called sleep is repeatedly launched over and over
again. I hope that helps improve the focus.

Hi,

This seems to be a problem with the folder in whihc Inkscape is. Could you
try to move Inkscape to /Applications instead of /Applications/Graphic
Design...
In addition path checks were added in recent versions so this sould be
fixed.
Let me know if we can close this.

The special characters involved here are & and ƒ.
We need to either add a FAQ or escape them properly... but escaping every
single possibility will be difficult.

I already modified the launcher code to escape several other problematic
characters, and ran into one case I couldn't fix due to OSX's use of
directory seperators (see
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=1653742&group_id=93438&atid=604306).

We can try just escaping these characters, but maybe we need to coe up
with a more general fix for this problem.

I agree a generic method is suited. Does putting everything around quotes
everywhere could help?
For the other bug, I think we can assume that it is generally unsafe to
use slashes in a path, to add a FAQ and close the other bug. What do people
think?

Added a FAQ and lowering priority accordingly
