Bug Description

Environment:
unity8-deb on a fresh zesty installation in kvm

Steps:

1º Install zesty on kvm image
2º Enter unity8-deb
3º Check the default scope

Expected result: some scopes should be marked by default as favorite, unity-scope-mediascanner2 wasn't installed along with zesty so some scopes are missing

Current result: default scope is blank and only 3rd party scopes are available

Add info: Bug #1668701

I've filed FFe bug 1669543 to fix this for zesty, since we're post feature freeze.

How does unity-scope-mediascanner2 have anything to do with an empty dash in Unity 8? Adding it does not make the Dash have any content, so it does not appear to be a relevant for for this bug.

I believe we'd also need to ship a config piece to make the mediascanner scope a default favorite scope, like it is in Touch.

Michael Terry (mterry) wrote :

Oh looking into it, we already ship that config piece. The default gschema setting for favorite-scopes is in unity-schemas, part of the unity7 source.

We should do whatever we can to avoid a blank window, including hiding this completely, and do not display at login.

@Pat, with the branch we have in the pipeline that adds mediascanner scopes by default, it won't be a blank window. It will only be a *mostly* blank window. You'll see the header "Music" and, if you are connected to the internet, a few album covers from 7digital.

Still could be improved, but a big step up from a completely white rectangle.

This is not really fixed. Seems an MIR is needed for the unity-scope-mediascanner otherwise it will not be seeded on the image (currently it's in universe)

The media scopes will not have a very good experience as I am pretty sure things will not play by default.

So what do we want to do with this?

Michał Sawicz (saviq) wrote :

FWIW ubiquity does offer to install the Fluendo codecs, so that should solve at least the "will not play" issue?

Michael Terry (mterry) wrote :

Yeah it might not play in "Try Ubuntu" mode, but it should in "Install Ubuntu" mode if you have codecs. But I haven't verified that. Pat, are you saying there are additional (non-codec) issues with playing sound in u8?

For me the music scope crashes when I try to refresh it and the video scope doesn't find anything.
Trying to play anything from a file manager window I get there is no app installed.
Any of this work for you?
