Bug Description

Using recently updated File Manager on Aquarius E4.5 which now includes 'Network' when 'Places' selected.

What happens:

1. Select 'Places'
2. Select 'Network' - shows smb:// (1 file)
3. Select WORKGROUP - shows smb://WORKGROUP (2 files) - listed as
    ee
    nasbox
3 Select 'nasbox' - shows smb://nasbox (0 files)

Devices are listed by 'description', not their device/server names, which are
   BRIGHTBOX2 (my router)
   DYLAN (my NAS)

What is expected:

1. selecting 'nasbox' (aka DYLAN) should show 8 folders.

(by comparison with what is shown in Nautilus)

Hello,

Regarding to "Devices are listed by 'description'" it can be easily fixed.

Regarding to it does not show the content of "nasbox", have you first checked "unlock full access" option first?

if not, please try do it and try it again.
if so or if it does not work after doing it, can you capture the filemanager output and post it here (I am not sure logcat works for that)?

Thanks,
Carlos

Hi Carlos,

Thanks for looking at this. It is very much appreciated. Proper network access is very important to me, and probably to a lot of other Ubuntu phone users.

I can 'test' certain things by using Nautilus on the desktop. If I use 'Connect to Server' there and type in smb://nasbox, it doesn't work, whereas smb://dylan gives the result I have posted above.

On the phone:

I have tried "unlock full access" and it makes no difference.
Typing in the address smb://dylan (or smb://nasbox) does not give me access to the NAS.

It's possible that changing the program to look for server names instead of descriptions may be all that is needed.

I will post some more screen shots of File Manager for you to add to the one I have posted above.

Thanks again,
Tony

Hello Tony,

I am looking for "console ouput" not for screen shots. Are you able to get it? (maybe using logcat)

Do you need password to access those servers content?

Thanks,
Carlos

Hi Carlos

As you see from my screen shot, Nautilus shows 8 shares on my NAS (dylan). The closest equivalent of what you are doing on the phone is Browse Network > Windows Network > WORKGROUP > DYLAN > shows 8 folders. This requires no password. Of the 8 folders, access to four does not require passwords (public, photo, music and video) as they are public shares. The other four do require passwords.

Is this what you are looking for as log file output?

I changed the description on my NAS from 'nasbox' to 'dylan' so selecting WORKGROUP now shows:

  dylan
  ee

selecting 'dylan' shows the four public folders:

  music
  photo
  public
  video

This shows that if you change to program to get device/server names instead of descriptions, then the program will work.

It would be even better if you can get the private folders and ask for the user name and password to access them. as Nautilus does.

Tony,

I will work next weekend to fix the problem related to the "name" of the servers.

Regarding to private folders, it should show all folders if you "unlock full access", then when you try to access private folders it should ask for user/password, this behavior was a design decision.

Many Thanks,
Carlos

Carlos,

That's great. I will look forward to a new version of File Manager in due course. Meanwhile, I have a workaround for access to my NAS.

As I said before, your work on this is very much appreciated. I wish I had the technical skills to engage in development work, but I will continue to help where I can by reporting bugs and doing all I can to help devs to fix them.

In respect to the design decision about access to private folders, I don't think it has been thought through enough. For instance, now I have signed in to my own private folder and the login credentials are saved for it, it would good if it were now shown without having to unlock full access.

Hi Tony,

The new version will be available soon, when you get that, please test it without your work around.

Thank you very much.

Hi Carlos

I have downloaded update 4.501 and reset my NAS back to device ID 'dylan' and description 'NASbox'.

File manager now displays device IDs

  brightbox2
  dylan

when WORKGROUP selected.

Selecting 'dylan' correctly displays shares on that device so I can confirm that this bug is fixed.

Thanks, Carlos. Your work is very much appreciated.

Hi Carlos

I'm using Ubuntu File Manager App for a long time now and I'm facing the same issue. Even with the latest version.
With previous versions, it worked time to time.

I read this bug few month ago and I've never take time to re-open it.

I'm the owner of 2 NAS :
- Fisrt one is an old ICYBOX IB-NAS4210-B and I do not have any problem with it.
- Second one is a Synology DS214Play and I've got the problem.
I see WORKGROUP and when I click on it IB-NAS4210-B and DS214PLAY.
But when I click on DS214PLAY, the application didn't show any directories (It should show at least 5 directories)
It should ask for a paswword but it didn't.
The shared directories are configured through DSM interface.
I just set "Enable Windows file service" (WORKGROUP by default) and in advanced setting :
- "Max protocol for Windows File Service" = SMB2
- "Apply default UNIX permissions" checked

Any idea about what may cause the issue ?

Remark : I saw this issue first on BQE4.5 ubuntuphone and I can reproduce it with my BQ M10 FHD Tablet.

Thanks,

Yannick

Hi Yannick

Are you sure this is the same issue? This problem was due to the app using device descriptions instead of the server ID.

If it works OK for one device (your old ICYBOX) but not for your Synology DS214Play, it suggests that there is some thing wrong with the setup on your Synology DS214Play

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your answer.
I'll check again the settings of the Synology DS214Play.
But, currently I have no idea of the solution regarding the options proposed.

Yannick

Hello G uys,

I am sorry for the delay,

The bug about listing servers by their description had been fixed. Code
has not changed since that

Is it possible to know which version are you using?
