Bug Description

Using gtk 3.16 in vivid, typing a letter in a fileselector dialog doesn't select the correspond file or folder, that's known upstream as https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=748672

We might get it back by reverting https://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?id=8f9c8120b9d8a4cfa9ed1777da37f7a2d618a3a6 with maybe some extra commits needed (e.g https://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?id=71bd1c7e2c5252b5103bf029e437787e0a002951)

Is this going to be backported to gtk 3.14 in vivid? That shows the exact same (irritating) problem, without type-ahead things are pretty much broken for keyboard-oriented users. Thanks for spotting and fixing this!

This bug was fixed in the package gtk+3.0 - 3.16.4-2ubuntu1

---------------
gtk+3.0 (3.16.4-2ubuntu1) wily; urgency=low

  * Merge with Debian. Remaining changes:
    + Enable Mir backend.
    + Drop 022_disable-viqr-im-for-vi-locale.patch
    + Drop 061_multiarch_module_fallback.patch - unneeded in Ubuntu since we
      cleared all old gtk modules out.
    + Install the settings.ini file to set our themes.
    + Enable parallel builds
    + Ubuntu specific patches:
      - 073_treeview_almost_fixed.patch
      - 074_eventbox_scroll_mask.patch
      - bzg_gtkcellrenderer_grabbing_modifier.patch
      - ubuntu_gtk_custom_menu_items.patch
      - print-dialog-show-options-of-remote-dnssd-printers.patch
      - uimanager-guard-against-nested-node-updates.patch
      - x-canonical-accel.patch
      - message-dialog-restore-traditional-look-on-unity.patch
      - 0001-gtk-reftest-Force-icon-theme-to-Adwaita.patch
    + Add Breaks on gnome-shell << 3.16 - this needs to be updated at the same
      time.
    + Add Breaks on old overlay-scrollbar versions which still provided the gtk3
      module - we don't want to use this any more with GTK 3.16.
    + Update Mir backend from upstream git.

gtk+3.0 (3.16.4-2) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Merge changes from 3.14.13-1.
  * debian/README.Debian:
    + Removed, that's for gtk+2.0. Closes: #622913.
  * debian/control.in:
    + Drop versioned dependency on pkg-config. The version is satisfied
      in oldstable and that helps other packages that provide pkg-config.
      Closes: #734481.
  * Upload to unstable.

gtk+3.0 (3.16.4-1) experimental; urgency=medium

  [ Iain Lane ]
  * build with --fail-missing when doing an indep build
  * Install some utilities and missing icons, desktop files and manpages into
    gtk-3-examples (for want of a better package).
  * clean up reftest known_fail files in clean target which we create in
    pre-build

  [ Emilio Pozuelo Monfort ]
  * New upstream release.

Unfortunately it seems like this bug has resurfaced.

For reference, it looks like this may have also been fixed here: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/gtk3-typeahead/

Any chance this regression will be repatched for Ubuntu 20.04?

This bug is related to the removal of type-ahead in nautilus:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1164016
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1666681
The nautilus bug was never repatched in the Ubuntu repos, but a PPA was created (https://launchpad.net/~lubomir-brindza/+archive/ubuntu/nautilus-typeahead). I don't know of any such PPA for the gtk version of the bug, however.

Thanks for your great work!
