Bug Description

When attempting to install Gutsy beta, the installation freezes at the migrate documents and settings section.

Pasted below is the last section of /var/log/messages:

Sep 27 17:18:43 ubuntu os-prober: debug: os detected by /usr/lib/os-probes/50mounted-tests

df command shows this is mounted:

/dev/hda2 19543072 13090364 6452708 67% /mnt/migrationassistant

hda2 is indeed an NTFS partition, with Windows XP installed.

Barry,
Can you please run the installer using the --debug option (`ubiquity --debug` in a console window), then attach /var/log/syslog and /var/log/installer/debug to this bug report? When you say "freezes", I'm assuming you mean that the installer is stopping at the migrate documents and settings page and not letting you proceed past it, correct? That is, it's not getting to the actual install routine (when you see a copying files progress bar). Do you by any chance have a Windows Vista partition on this computer?

Thanks!

That's correct. I get a busy pointer after trying to proceed beyond the migration screen, which never goes away. There is no installation of Vista on the drive, just XP (one partition is NTFS).

I'll upload the two files shortly.

Oddly, if I run 'ubiquity --debug' rather than just clicking on the icon, it goes past the stalling screen without a problem - I have tried this twice. I rebooted and tried the standard way of installing again and it froze in the same place (that's now four attempts with the same result).

I've uploaded /var/log/syslog from trying to install the normal way.

To install Gutsy do not mark the ntfs partition in the partition editor.
You can also successfully install Gutsy by running this command line from a terminal session "ubiquity

Just don't mark, or name your NTFS or FAT32 partitions.
Th NTFS and FAT32 partitions should appear after installation reboot.

Thanks! Wow! Everyone's feedback was so quick! I'm pretty much a n00b
to the recent Linux world (haven't used it since older versions of Red
Hat) and I can't even imagine a commercial software vendor coming back
with such concise responses so quick.

I also have an NTFS partition and ended up reinstalling Feisty. I ran
the update through the update manager and all is well so far. Thanks
again for the response!

Dave: What exactly do you mean by mark?

By default (choosing manual partitioning) the nfts drive is marked with fs=ntfs and mountpoint=/media/sdaX, the fat drive is marked with fs=fat32 and mountpoint=/media/sdaY
This setup will hang.
I tried (new boot from CD) changing the fs mark on the ntfs partition to "don't use" (keeping fat on default) - did not work.
I tried (new boot from CD) changing the fs mark on the fat partition to "don't use" (keeping ntfs on default) - did not work.
I finally tried (new boot from CD) changing both partitions to "don't use" - did not work.

The only way I got around this was to use --no-migration-assistant.

Dave: What exactly do you mean by "To install Gutsy do not mark the ntfs partition in the partition editor"?

By mark I mean do not check the box next to the NTFS, or edit the partition all call it /windows.
That is what worked for me. When i rebooted Gutsy my /windows partiton was recognized as /sda1.

I seem to be having the same problem with the Hardy beta (+) live-install CD. I can free up the system by unmounting all (or some) of the partitions left mounted by os-prober and migration-assistant. When I run with --debug the problem doesn't occur. I suspected the mounts as multiple devices were left mounted on the same mount points. I have a hunch that a race condition is involved somehow, but I don't know that.

The system doesn't hang if I specify --no-migration-assistant, run with --debug,don't mark a windows partion at hda6 as don't use, or mount all partitions to appropriate different /media/hdxx mount points before hand. I tried this last idea realizing that running ubiquity under an installed gutsy system wasn't hanging and the mounts remaining after running it weren't as funky.

migration-assistant leaves out partitions in its survey of users available for migration. Which ones it
leaves out and leaves in are difficult to predict. Sometimes it says none are available and sometimes it
lists most (from 1 ntfs partition (hda1) and 4 ext3 partitions (hda5, hdb2/6, hdb7/8, hdb9). Rarely are all partitions represented. The last userid of hdb9 is often left out, but that may be a different problem.

As ubiquity is running gnome file explorers pointing to partitions start up on their own, I suspect as partitions are mounted by ubiquity components.

I can get around all of this. I'm submitting this report to provide feedback on Hardy beta. Please advise if
I can do anything helpful.

Thanks for confirming our issues are separate. We'll see with time if others report trouble like mine.

I have installed hardy in a test partition and I don't have problems with ubiquity if I run with everything already mounted, but it does produce problems if nothing but the root directory is mounted. So it depends.

I believe my problem is probably triggered by the changes in the gnome software. I'm recommending one patch that would be a reaction to the gnome changes, and one patch that would make ubiquity more robust in the face of further gnome software interference or interference from other software.

I'm running with the daily live cd from last Sunday, so I should already have the patch you found. I think the problem is software like gnome-volume-manager, other gnome software, and Nautilus, in particular, interfering with ubiquity.

If nobody but me experiences a problem it won't matter. I can circumvent the problem or apply the patches I developed so I'm ok no matter what. I just wanted to pin down the problem in case others run into it as hardy is nearing release. I have a large number of partitions so I suspect that I may be more vulnerable to the timing issues than others.

Thanks both for writing and for your research.
