So this bug needs to be retasked against the right package.

If it helps I've just tried creating a file in the latest daily image for Kubuntu (64-bit) and using the Dolphin File Manager, the file *does* get moved to trash.

Thunar is the package that is having the issue. Perhaps the work around
would be to use another file manager.

What we know, thunar can't find it. That problem starts there.

Thunar is not installed in Lubuntu.

In Ubuntu I get 'file cannot be moved to trash delete file' warning

Lubuntu is a bit more specific (see screenshot)

Definitely not Thunar - that's just what is showing the issue up for Xubuntu.

I know thunar is not installed in lubuntu. The issue was found in xubuntu
using thunar.

Now that the issue shows up in lubuntu means the problem is more that the
file manager.

gvfs-trash file fails in Xubuntu and Ubuntu, Lubuntu apparently doesn't have gvfs-trash installed.

sudo gvfs-trash works in all (once installed in Lubuntu)

deleting a folder works as expected

There was no variable named "$XDG_DATA_HOME/Trash.

I am thinking, gvfs was unable to label the file as located in trash.
Wish I was a developer. I would really like to know technically
gvfs-trash works with the filesystem.

It is not happening after installation, on Ubuntu MATE, on either i386 or 64-bit.

As @Elfy stated, deleting a folder works as expected in a live session, and a folder that contains a file or files also works as expected.

Changed in gvfs (Ubuntu):
status: Incomplete → Confirmed

Though this is a bug, the fact that one can still delete a file is good. That is what is important. Another thing that came to mind, what rates this bug high. Is there a security risk associated with this issue?
