I disagree that this is invalid.

From the release notes for Ubuntu 14.04.02: "Anyone wishing to opt into the hardware enablement stack for Trusty may do so by running following command which will install the linux-generic-lts-utopic and xserver-xorg-lts-utopic packages:

sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-utopic xserver-xorg-lts-utopic libegl1-mesa-drivers-lts-utopic xserver-xorg-video-all-lts-utopic xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-utopic "

If you already have Ubuntu 14.04.01 installed in Virtualbox with guest additions running, this will result in virtualbox-guest-x11 being removed and it is impossible to reinstall due to the unmet dependencies listed above.

This is not about mixing an xorg from Utopic. It's about updating your LTS release and that update breaking a fairly important piece of functionality. Basically without the guest-x11 package, virtualbox defaults to 640x480 resolution and become basically useless.

as said before there is no easy solution, and for me (unfortunately) this is a "won't fix"

<mlankhorst> LocutusOfBorg1: in general vm's should use the unrenamed stack, and trusty 14.04.1
<mlankhorst> you can still use the lts-utopic kernel if you want
<LocutusOfBorg1> mlankhorst, I'm the virtualbox maintainer lol
<LocutusOfBorg1> I'm asking how to (if possible) fix the "bug"
<mlankhorst> create a virtualbox-x11-lts-utopic :P
<LocutusOfBorg1> yes, I was thinking about something like that, how to trigger the rebuild with the -lts-utopic packages?
<LocutusOfBorg1> and how can I be sure users will pick up it?
<LocutusOfBorg1> seems a big trouble
<mlankhorst> they won't pick it up, you need to create a rename for the -lts-utopic package
<mlankhorst> you need to create a separate virtualbox-lts-utopic package
<LocutusOfBorg1> and maintain it ;)
<mlankhorst> or advise users to stay on 14.04.1, they can upgrade the kernel if they want
<mlankhorst> the problem is that newer xorg may break the x11 api, so you can't just rebuild the old virtualbox against a newer xorg in some cases
<LocutusOfBorg1> I guess I need (in case of breakage) to patch the code like I do with the kernel

I can see that maintaining 2 virtualbox-x11 packages in one release is not desirable, but at the end of the day Ubuntu Trusty is meant to be supported until 2019. How many more hardware stacks will be released in that time and will virtualbox remain locked against the original stack all that time?

I don't know the technicalities of packaging this, but is it not possible to use the Utopic virtualbox-x11 package and change the dependencies to point to xorg-lts-utopic?

FIghting this problem too, was trying to build a vm from the current ISO. The previous poster's solution doesn't seem to apply cleanly for me - have quite a few more complaints, and then if proceed anyway, end up with a kernel/initrd combo that doesn't boot. Trying to build guest additions from the vbox sources (their iso) fails, as it quits claiming an unrecognized x11 version.

I am happy to report that the packages from the location listed above (https://launchpad.net/~costamagnagianfranco/+archive/ubuntu/virtualbox-ppa/+packages) do let things work for me.

I uploaded on my ppa a new virtualbox-lts-vivid
 virtualbox-lts-vivid 4.3.34-dfsg-1+deb8u1ubuntu1.15.04.1~14.04.1ubuntu1

this package is building only the guest stack, not the host.
In this way I simplified a lot the packaging, since the x11 error is a problem that only the guest has.

I uploaded a virtualbox 5.0.12 that works with host and guest, and if it doesn't work (because of mesa-lts-utopic installed), you can use virtualbox on the host and virtualbox-guest-utils-lts-vivid, virtualbox-guest-x11-lts-vivid virtualbox-guest-dkms-lts-vivid or virtualbox-guest-source-lts-vivid from the same ppa (4.3.34 version).

let me know if anything is not working (specially for the lts part), because I think I'll test a few days and then maybe upload on trusty.

thanks!

G.

even better, since the problem is just in the -guest-x11, I'm just creating a guest-x11-lts-vivid and a guest-utils-lts-vivid, and I'll keep the guest-dkms and guest-source from the already in the repo, main version.

and I don't delete useless files anymore (cp instead of mv) so I can have a minimal debdiff between the complete version and the stripped one.

I couldn't make the only -x11 package installable, because of too strict guest-dkms dependencies (they need the same version as the x11 package).

So instead of fixing virtualbox everywhere, I'll just provide the guest-* complete stack for lts-utopic.

 virtualbox-lts-vivid - 4.3.34-dfsg-1+deb8u1ubuntu1.15.04.1~14.04.1ubuntu5

What I did:
1. clean OS installation
2. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:costamagnagianfranco/virtualbox-ppa
3. sudo apt-get update
4. sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-dkms-lts-vivid (also virtualbox-guest-utils-lts-vivid and virtualbox-guest-x11-lts-vivid were installed automatically)
5. reboot
6. After the reboot, resolution is changed to a high one but UI is still choppy
7. In "Additional drivers" after I switch "VirtualBoxGraphics Adapter" to "Using x86 virtualization solution - X11 guest utilities from virtualbox-guest-x11 (open source)" and click on "Apply Changes", the progress bar appears for a few seconds and then it switches back to "Do not use this device"
8. I have started cmd utility ubuntu-drivers and it prints following error:
janko@System360:~$ sudo ubuntu-drivers debug

What should I do to force it to use *lts-vivid driver? Will it help with choppy graphics (resolution is already ok)?

You need if you have xorg-server-lts-vivid to instal the lts-vivid, and remove the lts-wily package.
otherwise you can upgrade to the lts-wily stack but be sure you only have one, and the corresponding virtualbox version installed.

Ok, now they are in -proposed repo... but apt-cache policy tells me I already have exactly the same packages installed (I guess they must be the same as in PPA). So I can confirm they work. Should I add verification-done tag as asked, or wait for someone else to test them?

I did create a trusty chroot, installed the lts-xenial stack (mesa, kernel, xorg) and apt-get installed successfully the virtualbox-guest-dkms-lts-xenial package.

Setting up virtualbox-guest-utils-lts-xenial (4.3.36-dfsg-1+deb8u1ubuntu1.14.04.1~14.04.4) ...
Setting up virtualbox-guest-dkms-lts-xenial (4.3.36-dfsg-1+deb8u1ubuntu1.14.04.1~14.04.4) ...

of course the -vivid stack is not installable anymore and this is correct since I enabled the xenial stack
