Bug Description

Test Case
---------
1) Restore the clone file in bug #1396299 (sudo apt-clone restore VarLogDistupgradeAptclonesystemstate.tar.gz)
2) run do-release-upgrade
3) Observe the upgrade fail
4) Check /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log for "'update-manager-kde' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist."

With the proposed version of the release upgrader the upgrade will proceed and you can confirm that update-manager-kde is in the Remove list in /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log.

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgarde....

You seem to have two meta packages installed ubuntu and kubuntu:

2014-04-26 17:08:51,267 DEBUG Marking 'ubuntu-desktop' for upgrade
2014-04-26 17:08:51,605 DEBUG Marking 'kubuntu-desktop' for upgrade

This then leads to an error upgrading update-manager:

2014-04-26 17:08:52,152 DEBUG blacklist expr 'update-manager' matches 'update-manager-kde'
2014-04-26 17:08:52,153 DEBUG The package 'update-manager-kde' is marked for removal but it's in the removal blacklist

You might try removing update-manager-kde and see if that helps.

Hello, please guide the non-techies like myself .
I only upgrade from LTS to LTS, and via the pop-ups, not terminal commands.
However, I'm willing to give it a try but please give me the EXACT commands to type in order to:
1/ remove update-manager-kde
2/ provoke the upgrade to the new LTS
Thanks in advance

Francois, I am not a "techie" but I'll try to describe the procedure:

from the desktop you will have to start a terminal-session.
Start Applications menu -> Accessories -> Terminal. Or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Alt + T

then from the command-prompt type:

sudo apt-get remove update-manager-kde <ENTER>

type in your password when asked

When finished removing kde return to the desktop and start the scan for updates again. When the scanning is finished you'll see a big button for the availability of the 14.04 version. Click it and follow the procedure. In my case this process was halted before because of the kde-manager being installed. After kde was removed the upgrade worked fine. The upgrade-process might take some hours.

I tried this and it still did not work. I had major problems so I ended up nuking and paving. It was not as bad as it sounds and now everything seems to work OK.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance!

I tested the version of ubuntu-release-upgrader in trusty-proposed by using 'do-release-upgrade -p' on a Saucy system (with the appropriate apt-clone file) and the upgrade was successfully calculated.
