Bug Description

I am running Ubuntu 13.10 with onboard version 0.99.0-0ubuntu1.

When attempting to type into the Unity Dash (search bar) the dash closes whenever a key is pressed.

This seems to be a regression of Bug #915250.

It is not a major issue to me currently as I have found two workarounds that seem to resolve the issue for now:
1. Undock Onboard and set Force to top.
2. Maximize Unity Dash window.

Thanks for your bug report.

Bug #915250 was about Onboard being hidden below Dash. Is this still a problem for you?

From your initial description, bug #960537 seems like a better match. It's still open, unfortunately. There seems to have been some work on it, but as of today auto-show is still not reliable in Dash. I wish we could do more about this from Onboard's side, but as it is, we depend on working focus notifications from applications - and Unity Dash.

Bug #960537 seems to regard Onboard not automatically opening when the Dash is opened.

Although I have noticed that happens more often than not, what I was talking about is closer to what was described in Bug #915250.

If I don't have the Unity Dash maximized, even if I have manually shown the keyboard before opening it, upon pressing a key, the Dash closes and the key is passed to whatever program I had in the foreground, or the Desktop if nothing is open.

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, this is indeed one incarnation of bug #915250. I can reproduce it with 0.99.0 and docking enabled. Onboard ends up below Dash and Dash closes on click.

Docking is supposed to imply force-to-top on Compiz, and only there. The problem was, that the window manager detection broke at some point during the Saucy cycle. Trunk has had a fix for this for a while, but Saucy's 0.99.0 is still affected.

I 'll ask Francesco to add current trunk to our snapshot PPA. If you can, please test it from there and let us know how it goes.

i can still reproduce the bug in 14.04 with onboard 1.0.0. Unless i have 'force window to top' enabled in preferences opening the dash steals focus from onboard and therefore makes it impossible to type in the dash withput using the physical keyboard.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for your report. Could you please confirm that Unity dash closes when you type into the search field (as discribed in this bug), or are you rather experiencing the following new bug?

Hi Francesco,

I think it's actually the same issue as this bug (#1249825), but I couldn't find a way to re-open this bug so I created a new one (#1375028) opened against the onboard version in trusty.

Hi Tim,

Sorry, I did not notice that it was you that filed the new bug.

Thanks for filing the new bug, as I think that this old bug and the new bug differ on the following: in the old bug, it was dash itself that disappeared (if I understand the description correctly); in the new bug, it is Onboard that disappears.
