Bug Description

The time indicator should always display time in 24h format to make better use of the available space in the indicator bar.

Currently the time is displayed with an AM or PM, this is incorrect.

Uhm, no. It should use what's appropriate for the locale that it's in. It should not use 24-hour time by default in the US. Nobody understands it. Currently the code supports that translation, it just needs to be translated into UK/other locales.

John and Oren both think we should use 24-hour time regardless, for space-saving reasons.

I'm skeptical that enough people understand 24-hour time, but I have no evidence either way.

I would agree. Most people in the US would describe that as "broken."

The code is currently based on the locale, and it detects based on how
your locale is configured. We can change the default locale to be UK
English. That might realise a solution to the problem.

Or we can change how it is formatted. There's no reason it needs to be
"12:42 PM", it could be "12:42 pm" or "12:42p". Or has Jouni mentioned
we can us sub or super script.

Ted is correct that this is "broken" for end-user use in the US. You would never see a US roadside time & temperature display using 24h time, nor would a phone for US users default to 24h.

One approach would be to have a 12h/24h toggle available in ubuntu-system-settings and to tailor the default based on region.

The phone profile is currently using a hardcoded format that ignores all of the options (such as the 12h/24h toggle) available for the desktop. If we decide to have a 12h/24h toggle in the phone profile, we should think about reusing the dconf setting code that the desktop profile's currently using.

As a user in the United States, the very first option I looked for in System Settings was for a 24h toggle. I do not like the AM/PM due to space and it is also not what I'm used to. With that said, I am certainly a minority in the US (outside of the military) in using the 24h format. I would love for there to be a toggle for 12/24h format like there is in Android.
