Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I have a collection generated with rhythmbox in feisty and it works properly.
I've upgraded to gutsy and now when I try to play a file, rhythmbox puts an red icon near the file instead of playing it. When I double click the icon, a windows apears saying:

Internal GStreamer error: state change failed. Please file a bug at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=GStreamer.

That window has a close button only.

I tried to play some other files and then rhythmbox crashed.

Reopened rhythmbox and the same thing happens but rhythmbox doesn't crash while trying to play files.

I found a fast way to reproduce it. I open rhythmbox, and repeatedly click on "play" button until it crash.

I noticed that the previous log complains about lack of symbols, so I installed rhythmbox-dbgsym and redo the backtrace.

Would be interesting a valgrind log?

I've found that this happens only if rhythmbox can't reach the audio hardware. I had an ALSA misconfiguration and once solved rhythmbox doesn't crash. Anyway this is a bug, if rhythmbox can't use the hardware it must say that instead of crash.

how did you misconfigure alsa? a way to trigger the bug could make easier working on it. Could you get a backtrace with libglib2.0-0-dbg installed?

Well.... It's hard to tell. The misconfiguration happened during the upgrade
from feisty to gutsy.
I was trying thing to make rhythmbox work but nothing helped. I deleted
.asoundconf and .asoundrc.asoundconf from my home and nothing changed. Then
user asoundconf-gtk to select the default sound card (because I have 2 of
them plus a tv card) and then rhythmbox started working.

I tried to delete .asoundconf and .asoundrc.asoundconf but rhythmbox doesn't
crash now. Then I tried to select a nonexistent card (asoundconf
set-default-card nonexistent) and it crash again.

Ok, now it doesn't crash when the sound card is unreachable, but the error message is of no help.

"Problem occurred without error being set. This is a bug in Rhythmbox or GStreamer"

I'm using hardy now, and can't test it on feisty any more.

At least it doesn't crash.
