Bug Description

After I had strange problems with a Feisty installation (reported here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub/+bug/107951) I found a workaround (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub/+bug/107951/comments/19). But my CD-RW and DVD drives do not work. They are not detected. The CD-RW drive (LITE-ON LTR-48125S) is mentioned by dmesg with an error (see link above) but the DVD is not.

I attach the output of 'sudo lshw -short'. If you need further information please let me know.

Best wishes
Christoph

As I'm in my office now I can attach the output of 'lspci -vvnn' and dmesg tonight when I'm at home again. But as mentioned above you can already find the dmesg output here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub/+bug/107951/comments/19

I just found that USB mass storage device aren't detected neither. See dmesg-usb.part. Should I open a new bug for this? BTW: Those devices worked fine with Sarge.

[Forget about the USB problem, I found a workaround (removing the microSD/TransFlash adapter).]

I need my DVD and CD-RW drives! Are there any chances that this problem will be fixed soon? If not, please let me know.

Possibly same problem with my system.
A few days ago I had noticed that my drives no longer worked in Ubuntu 7.10.
Could have been related to a new kernel that was upgraded before, though that is speculation.

Here is my post in the ubuntuforums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4131019

Usual request information can be found there (/etc/fstab, lshw -C disk, lspci -vvnn, dmesg)

Should I open up my own bug?

I have added more info to my Ubuntu Forums topic.
Just today I tried booting with a Debian LiveCD and it worked fine.
The current Ubuntu 7.10 LiveCD will not.

I can glady upload all files I had posted in the forum if it would help.

I hope this will get fixed soon as I have no working CD-drives.
Thanks

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

At least on my system this problem was solved in the meantime. Sorry for not reporting it! I just forgot it.
