While ussing rosseta (https://launchpad.ubunto.com/rosetta) I found that you can transalate a document to both Spanish (lang-es) ans Spanish-Spain(lang-es-es) that duplicates the number of needed transalations since ussually people accept Spanish as Spanish-Spain for historical reasons. Some software have part of it transalated to "es" while other parts are translated to "es-es" -quite stupid, don't think so?- ). I think es-es is the correct one since using just "es" is something blur and even unpolite to other "es" variants. It looks spain-spanish is a first-class language that need no postfix, while es-ar, es-mx, es-co,... are second class ones.

What's more important "es" is ussually accepted as "es-es" but anyone is free to interpret it as "es-ar", "es-co", ... so there is a risk of mixed styles in the final es.po file.

I think the same bug applies to English, French and other major languages. My advice is to drop the "generic" options (en, fr, ...) in favor of better alternatives (en-en, fr-fr, ...).
