Bug Description

Release of Ubuntu:12.10
Package Version: gnome-control-center 3.4.2 and 3.5.x
Expected Results: system language setting needs to be respected
Actual Results: date is translated following the reginal format settings

Hallo
I want to have my system fully in English, but actually the date is translated in Italian.
I think that this depend on the fact that I choose Italian in regional format (but just to have numbering and currency that I use), I don't want to have the date translated into another language.
See attached screenshot.

Thanks
Fabio

Fabio,

Thanks for your effort to improve Ubuntu by reporting this issue!

I agree on your description, and that it's a bug, but I would not consider it to be a language-selector bug. Rather this problem is about many date/time displaying apps that simplify too much. In this case I think it's the indicator-datetime package that needs to be tweaked, so I changed the affected distro accordingly.

While awaiting that somebody fixes the bug, I suggest that you open Language Support, click the Help button and go to the "Advanced format settings" section. Setting LC_TIME to "en_DK.UTF-8" may give the desired result for you.

affects: language-selector (Ubuntu) → indicator-datetime (Ubuntu)

I have proposed some code changes to indicator-datetime, which I think fix this bug. There is a 12.10 build including the proposed changes in my PPA, so to test the fix you can download indicator-datetime from there: https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/misc

Yes, as the screenshot above display, it fix perfectly on Quantal.
On Raring it is working only partially, meaning that it fix only the notify area display, but not the calendar that still in Italian as showed in the next screenshot

To me the calendar is shown in the current language also in Raring.

If I remember it correctly, the calendar wasn't instantly shown in the current language when I tested the fix (in Quantal). After a few logouts/logins - possibly including language switches - it suddenly started to work. Please don't ask me why. ;-)

I wrote a glib patch which can be seen as an alternative fix of this bug, and would replace the proposed changes to indicator-datetime. The glib patch is attached to https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=687945
Please note, though, that the glib patch is not effective as regards names of days and months in the indicator-datetime calendar.

For the case you want to test the alternative fix, Raring builds of glib including the patch are available in my PPA at https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/misc

This bug won't be fixed before the 13.04 release, but there is a good chance that a fix during next development cycle will make it to 13.04 through an SRU.

I have uploaded to my PPA a fresh version of indicator-datetime for Raring including a fix. Please feel free to install it from https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/misc and test it.

Hallo Gunnar
Testing Ubuntu kylin installation I found that:
I installed Ubuintukylin in Italy, Ubiquity detect that I'm in Italy and automaticallyset the system.
Once system is installed, everything is in Chinese but the calendar is translated in Italian.

This bug is still present today. I installed Ubuntu 20.10 in English and I am located in Belgium. System configured automatically the formats as “Belgien”, i.e. with German dates & times.

Installing French allows me to select the “Belgique” format which displays the dates & times in French. Although still inconsistent, it will be less disturbing for me.

It would be better however if the language of dates & times was the system language, independently of the regional format.

The workaround mentioned in comment #3 may be worth repeating, i.e. open your ~/.profile file for editing and add this line:

export LC_TIME=en_DK.UTF-8
