Bug Description

Facebook doesn't show up in the publishing dialog.

If only Facebook is enabled in preferences/plugins, upon selecting "File-> Publish" get error message:

Unable to publish
Shotwell cannot publish the selected items because you do not have a compatible publishing plugin enabled. To correct this, choose Edit ▸ Preferences and enable one or more of the publishing plugins on the Plugins tab.

This is after an upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 prerelease (up to date packages as of today).

Thanks for reporting this bug. You should configure a facebook account in the Online Accounts panel which is inside the System Settings application; then you should be able to publish your pictures there.

I'll work on removing this error message, and presenting the publishing dialog anyway (it has an option to configure new accounts).

Under Unity, this does indeed work. I agree with you that this needs to be pointed to / configurable from within Shotwell, as it wouldn't be obvious to many users that a Facebook account is a system-wide setting. So as you have done I agree with keeping the bug open for that reason.

I personally really dislike the design decision to integrate an application so closely with a specific desktop environment. I use Xfce because I can't stand Unity (or GNOME 3), so I am unable to use this feature of Shotwell, which means I'll need to find some other photo management application. That's out of the scope of this bug report, so I'll open another with that issue. (I realize that maybe I could temporarily use Unity just to make this setting, however I am running into another bug in the display manager configuration that makes that not possible at the moment :-/ )

Daniel,

note that the Ubuntu Online Services integration is an Ubuntu extension to Shotwell, enabled via an Ubuntu patch to the Shotwell sources. If you build Shotwell from the source tarball from Yorba, you'll be able to use classic Facebook publishing without Ubuntu Online Services.

Isn't Mint 15 the latest release? If so, you could install the latest version of Shotwell at our PPA: https://launchpad.net/~yorba/+archive/ppa This version, however, doesn't support Ubuntu Online Accounts.

If you want to try the absolute latest, there's also Yorba's Daily Build PPA: https://launchpad.net/~yorba/+archive/daily-builds
