fixed a potential issue with '2nd bad iteration in a row' and the virtual
tricks. The latter were not reset correctly in this case -- this is not
incorrect, but surely not optimal. For the 'polfit' case, this could even lead
to NANs since there could be insufficients points to start the polynominal fit.
