Bug Description

Binary package hint: adduser

I originally reported this against installing ssl-cert, but then I got the same problem installing postfix and decided it must be something general. I tried running addgroup directly and had the same issue.

I've installed NIS on my Ubuntu 6.06.1 system and configured it for our NIS server; it all works fine. I added "+:::" to the end of /etc/group so that I could get NIS group lookup, and that works fine as well.

But, when "+:::" is at the end of /etc/group then any invocation of addgroup will hang forever.

If I remove that line, it works.

This is a major problem because many packages want to install new groups, and it's completely non-obvious what the problem is or what the solution might be when the installation/config scripts simply hang with no output at all.

This rather sounds more like a problem of the useradd program which is called by adduser.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I just retested this on my Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) system and could not reproduce the problem.
